Islamist Group Is Rising Force in a New Egypt.

CAIRO — In post-REVOLUTIONARY Egypt, where hope and confusion collide in the DAILY struggle to build a NEW nation, religion has emerged as a POWERFUL political force, following an unprising that was based on SECULAR ideals. The Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group once banned by the state, is at the forefront, transformed into a TACIT partner with the military government that MANY fear will thwart fundamental changes.
As the BEST organized and MOST EXTENSIVE opposition movement in Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood was expected to have an edge in the contest for influence. But what surprises MANY is its link to a military that vilified it.
There is a battle consuming Egypt about the direction of its revolution, and the military council that is now running the country is sending CONTRADICTORY signals. On Wednesday, the council endorsed a plan to outlaw demonstrations and sit-ins. Egyptians are searching for signs of CLARITY in such declarations, hoping to discern the direction of a state led by a SECRETIVE military council brought to power by a revolution based on demands for democracy, rule of law and an end to corruption.
About six groups from the ultraconservative Salafist school of Islam have also emerged in the era after President Hosni Mubarak’s removal, as well as a party called Al Wassat, intended as a MORE liberal alternative to the Brotherhood.
In the EARLY stages of the revolution, the Brotherhood was RELUCTANT to join the call for demonstrations. It jumped in only after it was CLEAR that the protest movement had gained traction. Throughout, the Brotherhood kept a LOW profile, part of a survival instinct honed during decades of repression by the state.
When the NEW prime minister, Essam Sharaf, addressed the crowd in Tahrir Square this month, Mohamed el-Beltagi, a PROMINENT Brotherhood member, stood by his side. A Brotherhood member was also appointed to the committee that drafted amendments to the Constitution.
Expedited calendar is seen as giving an advantage to the Brotherhood and to the remnants of Mr. Mubarak’s National Democratic Party, which have established national networks. The NEXT Parliament will oversee drafting a NEW constitution.

In post-revolutionary Egypt, where hope and confusion collide in the daily struggle to build a contemporary nation, religion has emerged as a strong political force, following an uprising that was based on nonreligious ideals. The Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamic group once banned by the state, is at the forefront, transformed into a silent partner with the military government that many fear will thwart fundamental changes.

There is a battle consuming Egypt about the direction of its revolution, and the military council that is now running the country is sending adverse signals.
Egyptians are searching for signs of clarity in such declarations, hoping to discern the direction of a state led by an enigmatic military council brought to power by a revolution based on demands for democracy, rule of law and an end to corruption.

  9. Tests of milk samples taken last week in Spokane, Wash., indicate the presence of radioactive iodine from the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan, but at levels far below those at which action would have to be taken, the Environmental Protection Agency said on Wednesday.
Levels of iodine 131 entering the air can be very diluted, but if the iodine is deposited on grass eaten by cows, the cows will reconcentrate it in their milk by a factor of 1,000. Iodine 131 emits beta particles, which resemble electrons. They are not considered a major hazard outside the human body, although in large doses, they can damage the cornea of the eye.The problem arises when materials that emit beta particles are ingested or inhaled. Iodine 131 is chemically identical to normal, nonradioactive iodine and thus is absorbed into the body just as normal iodine is, mainly in the thyroid gland, where it delivers a concentrated dose to that small organ and can cause cancer. In the Chernobyl nuclear accident of 1986, the biggest health effect was cases of thyroid cancer, especially in children living near the nuclear plant in Ukraine.

  11. Revamped Bullpen Closes Yankees’ Opener
It was a day for pitching. In relief of C. C. Sabathia, three relievers supplied an ending to a season against the Detroit Tigers. It was nine up, nine down for Joba Chamberlain, the new set-up reliever Rafael Soriano and the indomitable closer Mariano Rivera.
It was the second highlight of the. Put the Yankees ahead, 4-3, and marked the third consecutive opening day that he went deep. Earlier in the he was definitely surprised that he recovered so quickly from a strained oblique muscle he sustained March 22. A dominant spring training — 0.96 earned run average in 28 innings — prepared the Tigers ace Justin Verlander for his fourth consecutive opening day start, and the Yankees approached him with a definite strategy. They focused on driving up his pitch count. Mark Teixeira saw seven of them, and he came up in the third with a more aggressive plan. With runners on first and third and one out, he drilled a 1-1 fastball deep into the second deck in right field, only his second hit in 18 career at-bats against Verlander, to put the Yankees ahead, 3-1. Opening days have not been kind to Sabathia. Even for an ace. The transition from the warmth of spring training to miserable circumstances can affect his feel for his pitches. He seemed to throw more off-speed pitches earlier in the at-bat. After minimizing damage in the second, when he allowed one run after the Tigers loaded the bases with nobody out, Sabathia was victimized by a leadoff walk to Miguel Cabrera in the fourth, when the Tigers drew to within 3-2. Ryan Raburn . They evened the score at 3-3 in the fifth on an unearned run, after Robinson Cano dropped a flip on Will Rhymes’s bunt attempt, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Two hitters later, Cabrera lined a one-out sacrifice fly to center.

When you go to a restaurant and eat fish, first ask where it comes from. In Iceland they fish in the whaling industry. The whale and dolphin conservation society wanted to end the whaling industry in Iceland. Iceland is ignoring the petition this society did because they export whale meat, some England whale species and other thing that they receive when they kill these poor animals. The problem in the cod you buy is that this company is near the company HB grandi. So they share details on fishing ground and HB also process whale meat in their factory. These industries sell to the warners supplies fish for restaurants and hotels. These make lots of fishes sold to the United Kingdom. The WDCS is calling costumers to refuse to buy their products. Iceland is negotiating to join European Union. But they want to continue hunting whales. Eleven countries joined together to issue a statement condemning Iceland whaling industry. This is a big problem in which everyone should be involved, these poor animals are suffering.

  14. Can the tears of a clown contribute to the twisted ankle of a clown? According to an the answer is a guarded yes, depending on just what occasioned those tears. For the study, appearing in the April issue of The British Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers turned to a unique population of 47 athletes. Each had been, until recently, an elite competitor in gymnastics, trampoline, swimming or diving. But all were now retired from competition and hoping to join the circus. They had, in fact, entered a rigorous, specialized training program that could, if they succeeded, earn them a slot in a Cirque du Soleil troupe. Cirque du Soleil shows are exemplars of the modern theatrical circus, with the human body providing the magic, in lieu of elephants. Performers tumble, clown, dangle, contort and dance. During the four months, more than half of the athletes sustained an injury severe enough to require a visit to the on-site physical trainer. Some injured themselves multiple times. But other studies have shown the opposite, with low athletic self-confidence increasing injury risk. A recent survey of high school athletes, for example, found that those who reported in the preseason that they weren’t confident about how they would perform in the games and meets ahead tended to wind up hurt, especially if they were female. The Cirque study produced similar findings. The researchers looked at a quality called self-efficacy, which in psychological terms is a kind of enhanced self-confidence, the feeling that you are easily capable of performing the task ahead. Those athletes who had a low self-efficacy score on the health questionnaire were almost twice as likely to be injured as those who had scored high on that measure. Every activity involves a series of discrete, manageable skills that you can practice individually, she said. “Succeeding at a portion of the task will show you that you have the capacity to succeed at the res.

  16. Time Warner Pulls Channels From iPad App
    By BRIAN STELTER
Time Warner Cable on Thursday abruptly removed several channels from its app that replicates the TV viewing experience on an iPad.The companies have claimed that the iPad app is a contract violation — in part because they want cable companies like Time Warner Cable to pay them more for the privilege to stream their channels to portable device. The iPad, in essence, is the latest battleground for a long-running fight about how television will be delivered in the digital age, and by which companies. It said in a statement: “But, for the time being, we have decided to focus our iPad efforts on those enlightened programmers who understand the benefit and importance of allowing our subscribers — and their viewers — to watch their programming on any screen in their homes. Earlier in the week, Time Warner Cable started a public campaign to rally support for the app, which was released in Apple’s app store earlier in the month. “A company spokesman said that it would add new channels overnight, effectively replacing the channels that were removed on Thursday. The app previously had 32 channels, only a portion of the channels available through the traditional set-top box.
The debate over the app boils down to this question: When companies like Time Warner Cable buy the rights to beam channels to customers’ television sets. Other cable companies are working on their own streaming apps for the iPad. Cablevision said Thursday that it had released its app.The company had previously said it would unveil the app by the end of the first quarter, which ends Thursday.

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates told Congress that he opposed having the United States arm the Libyan rebels fighting Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, and that it was up to OTHER countries to provide them with weapons and much-needed MILITARY training. Mr. Gates’ comments were the FIRST time that a key member of the president’s NATIONAL security team had publicly expressed an opinion on the issue. He thinks providing training and weapons is not a UNIQUE capability for the United States, and somebody else can do that. He also said he strongly opposed putting ANY United States forces on the ground in Libya. Mr. Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, spoke and members of BOTH parties accused them of not doing enough in Libya. He said in his OPENING statement to the House committee that American involvement would be LIMITED, and that in his view, the conflict would probably end with Colonel Qaddafi’s removal from power, either by ECONOMIC and POLITICAL pressures or by his OWN people. Mr. Gates and Admiral Mullen were summoned before Congress as Colonel Qaddafi’ s forces pushed the rebels into a panicked retreat, and recaptured towns they had lost just days AGO because of ALLIED airstrikes. BOTH men suggested that the rebels should look beyond the United States for DIRECT MILITARY aid. There is a CONSIDERABLE debate within NATO over whether the U.N. The pair of high schoolers have been garnering major press for their campaign to rid palm oil from Girl Scout cookies—the production of which, as we’ve written about before, destroys rainforests in Malaysia and Indonesia, and puts endangered orangutans at risk.
When their efforts fell on deaf ears, the girls took their campaign one step further, and last week announced a partnership with the Rainforest Action Network to amplify their case. Already, the girls have had some key successes. Earlier this month, Kellogg—one of the major producers of the cookies—announced it would start purchasing GreenPalm certificates to cover the entirety of its palm oil usage. On their website’s FAQ page, the organization addresses the issue by making the dubious claim that it would be impossible to produce quality cookies without palm oil.

New Yorkers Still Waiting on That Living Wage Law Hearing
    by Lauren Kelley · April 18, 2011
    Topics: Workers' Rights

Back on March 11, I posted this:
"NYC's Living Wage Bill to Get Hearing in April."
Two weeks after a sprawling City Limits article asked if a living wage law could be the next New York City council 'battleground,' and one week after the launch of a petition urging Council Speaker Christine Quinn to support such legislation, Quinn has said that the Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act will get a City Council hearing in April.
Speaker Quinn and the rest of the city council lmembers are busy, and that many of them have not yet made up their minds about the legislation. But we aren't talking about actually voting on the bill yet; we're just talking about giving the darn thing a hearing so interested parties can have a say in the matter.
The world will not come to an end if the hearing gets pushed to May, or June. But we have to let the council know that we will not forget about this bill or allow it to stay.
We have to keep encouraging S.Q to take a stand on the Fair Wages for New Yorker Act. Although the bill would not go far enough towards ensuring a living wage for New York workers, it is an important step in the right direction.

  24. If there were a Girl Scout badge for environmental bravery and
dedication, 15-year-olds Madison Vorva and Rhiannon Tomtishen would be
first in line to get them.
The pair of high schoolers have been garnering major press for their
campaign to rid palm oil from Girl Scout cookies—the production of
which, as we’ve written about before, destroys rainforests in Malaysia
and Indonesia, and puts endangered orangutans at risk.
When their efforts fell on deaf ears, the girls took their campaign
one step further, and last week announced a partnership with the
Rainforest Action Network to amplify their case. Already, the girls
have had some key successes. Earlier this month, Kellogg—one of the
major producers of the cookies—announced it would start purchasing
GreenPalm certificates to cover the entirety of its palm oil usage. On
their website’s FAQ page, the organization addresses the issue by
making the dubious claim that it would be impossible to produce
    quality cookies without palm oil.
The company likely hopes the issue will simply disappear. With any
justice, a pair of 15-year-olds will ensure this doesn’t happen.
