  2. Online Activists Fight Child Pornography on Facebook
“No matter what Facebook might be doing now to prevent this violence against children, it is clearly not enough.”
Facebook. Is it a website millions of people use every day, the inspiration for an Oscar-winning film, or a hub for the creation and distribution of child pornography? Sadly, Facebook is all of the above. Child pornography and child sex trafficking don't just pop up occasionally on Facebook; criminals regularly use the site to systematically exploit children. In one day-long sweep alone, a Netizens Watch member found over 1,400 images of child pornography, from toddlers up to 14-year-olds. These images primarily manifest in closed groups created by pedophiles to share photos and videos of abused children and through profiles created by their pimps or abusers. Often, specific sex acts can be “ordered” on Facebook, and can include extreme violence."If Facebook has the human and technological resources to topple governments and shift human history, shouldn’t it be able to prevent sexually explicit images of child children?. “That's why Lepoutre and his colleagues are fighting back. They launched the Stop Child Porn on Facebook Campaign. The website allows you to send first-class mailed postcards to Facebook executives. asking them to prevent these crimes. And of course, the organization has also created a Facebook group – “Force Facebook to Block All Child Pornography”. “In the last 4 months we have sent nearly 1,500 links containing child pornography on Facebook to the police all over the world, in Ireland, the U.S., Canada, Spain, Australia, Brazil and several other countries. We want to flood Facebook’s offices with Stop Child Porn on Facebook cards demanding action. all, WE are the citizens of Facebook and WE have a right to demand its safety and security.”You can by signing this petition to fight child pornography on Facebook and send Facebook a snail mail card here. And of course, post this campaign to your Facebook profile.

"If Facebook has the human and technological resources to topple governments and shift human history, shouldn’t it be able to prevent sexually explicit images of children - some only newborns - from being placed on their system?”. “No matter what Facebook might be doing now to prevent this violence against children, it is clearly not enough.”- tells activist Richard Lepoutre.

Facebook. Is it a website millions of people use every day, the inspiration for an Oscar-winning film, or a hub for the creation and distribution of child pornography? Sadly, Facebook is all of the above. It has been used for child pornography that has been arranged from children that are toddlers to 14-year-old ones. Rich Lepoutre and a group of dedicated activists are fighting to stop this by asking the company to take responsibility for preventing misuse of their site.
Child pornography and child sex trafficking don't just pop up occasionally on Facebook; criminals regularly use the site to systematically exploit children. Netizens Watch, has discovered thousands of new false profiles featuring child pornography and images manifested in photos and videos of abused children. The company has failed to create a strategy to address this growing crime.
Lepoutre and his colleagues are fighting to end this. They launched the Stop Child Porn on Facebook Campaign, which serves as a call to action to both Facebook and its users to make fighting child exploitation a priority. To prevent these crimes, the organization has also created a Facebook group – “Force Facebook to Block All Child Pornography”.

You can help Lepoutre and Netizens, put this campaign to your Facebook profile. Because when dedicated activists come together, we can use the world's greatest social media tool to stop what could be the world's greatest facilitator of child abuse – even if they're one in the same.

  4. Title: Victory! Los Angeles Drops Charges Against DREAM Act Supporters.
    Author: Prerna Lal.

Los Angeles students are celebrating a victory after the City of Los Angeles decided to drop all charges against them for shutting down a busy intersection.
Last week, Los Angeles dropped charges against a group of students who shutdown Wilshire Boulevard in support of the DREAM ACT. They sat down near the federal building on Wilshire Boulevard to show their support for the federal DREAM ACT, a legislation that would give many of their undocumented youth friends a pathway to citizenship.
The shutdown was symbolic not just the traffic, but entire lives are disrupted because Congress has failed to take action on the DREAM Act. Citizens of the United States were eventually arrested and sit-down for two hours.
The case was closely watched for its implications on free speech. City Attorney Trutanich has charged dozens of immigrants rights advocates for exercising their right to free speech. Hypocrisy was evident because Los Angeles council voted supporting the DREAM ACT.
Over 50 change.org members signed the petition asking the city to drop charges against the students that were protesting.
The DREAM ACT would grant a path to citizenship for undocumented youth who arrive in the country as minors and pursue higher education.

  6. Education, “Victory! 50 Cent donates Gaddafi fee to UNICEF”

On Monday, 50 Cent made a donation of what he had received in a private presentation at the Venice Film Festival, to the people in Libya. Out of this, celebrities and others started donating fees they had received from the Gaddafi Regime.
50 Cent refused to comment beyond what was said by the press, which clarified that he had made a donation to UNICEF, which provides critical reliefs supplies to meet the necessities of women and kids in risk.
The reason of this campaign comes from the wake of Libya from protests in a bloody conflict.
It’s said that Nelly Furtado made a donation of a bout 1 million dollars to charity, Beyoncé announced she donated the fees to Haiti’s recovery, Usher and Mariah Carey also made their donations.
But then it stopped when the press said that any relationships with Libya have come to be seen as self-evident, wrong and shameful and it was a policy of mafia, being a serious mistake. Well, this isn’t like this, the reasons of these donations were very clear.
Bur, this can’t be the last thing in favor of helping Libya, some things are coming ahead.

  7. Big Tobacco vs. Lance Armstrong

    by Dan Peterson · March 16, 2011

In the state of California there is a big decision to make, whether to increase the tax on cigarettes or not. The money could be used for research against lung cancer so it is an important matter for health institutions, but cigarette companies state that this would not allow people with low-incomes to buy the product.
The California Cancer Research Act is advocating to raise the excise tax on a pack of cigarettes by $1 in a voter referendum.
If approved, the initiative could raise between $600-$750 million per year for cancer research, education and smoking cessation programs for California residents. So, smokers paying for research and education that may save them in the long run seems to make sense, except to one group: cigarette makers.
Lance Armstrong, joined the cause last month. "Well, I continue to be a person, as a cancer survivor, who hates this disease," said Armstrong. "I hate cancer. It's real simple. And no matter what we have to do in any state, in any country, to help fight the disease, then we'll do it."
Philip Morris USA, the nation's largest cigarette manufacturer, has created a new Political Action Committee (PAC) to fight the additional tax, claiming it is a regressive tax hurting both low-income smokers and the merchants that sell their products.
Having contributed to the defeat of the previous 14 legislative efforts to raise California cigarette taxes, Big Tobacco is confident they will prevail again.

SEATTLE OFFICER GETS AWAY WITH MURDER- by Charles Davis

“We believe that the death of the late John T. Williams was a tragedy that could have and should have been avoided,we believe that bringing charges and allowing the justice system to operate as it does for other citizens would start the necessary process of accountability and healing to move the family of the late John T. Williams, Officer Birk and the citizens of Seattle constructively forward.”
John William was murdered by a cop, he was just given less than 5 seconds to drop a knife he had in his hand, the officer didn't even wait, he shot John. John wasn't even threatening someone with the 3 inch blade he had!!! SOme believe the cop deserves to pay for his actions and go to jail.

Such is one of the perks of wearing a uniform, it seems: you can kill a man in a shooting that even your own employers won't stand behind, and the worst that can happen is you'll lose your job – though even that hasn't happened yet.
Williams was well known in Seattle for his skill as a woodcarver. When Officer Birk shot him dead on August 30 of last year, he was merely crossing the street with a wooden board and the 3” knife he used to carve, and according to eyewitnesses, he never rushed Officer Birk or so much as adopted an aggressive posture, contrary to the police department's initial claims.
One activist, Sheri Day, a member of Change.org and the Seattle-based John T. Williams Organizing Committee, gathered thousands of signatures, demanding Officer Birk be prosecuted for killing a harmless man – signatures she and other activists then delivered to King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg. But according to Satterberg, no prosecutable crime was apparently committed. His office is expected to announce the decision not to press charges at a news conference this afternoon.
Activists, meanwhile, are still hoping Officer Birk will have to face justice, not just the unemployment office.

Will the NY Police Chief Talk About the Central Park Cyclist Crackdown?

Central Park is a second home for cyclists, but with the NYPD's recent and largely unfair "crackdown" on riders in the park, this home is under threat. With the ticketing blitz souring the ride for many cyclists, the New York Cycle Club, a major organization among others in the NY cycling community, is mobilizing to take action. They consider being unfair and unnecessary wholesale harassment of the cycling community, the vast majority of whom are doing their best to ride in a safe and careful manner. Thousands in New York have taken action on this issue, including some of the 300 people who have signed the group's Change.org petition and more than 1,000 who have signed another started by a group of Central Park users. The club has been working with other cycling-oriented organizations, to have a sit down with New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and come up with a fairer and equitable enforcement solution for those few bad riders. The New York Cycle Club has been working city-wide to hold rider education workshops that Ellen Jaffe, the New York Cycle Club's president, says do wonders to inspire the safest and most responsible behavior in participants.

  11. Kent State Students: Don't Discriminate Against Sign Language
    By Carol Scott •

"A couple of my roommates were taking [ASL], and I would see them signing back and forth across the house and it drove me nuts" -Hellebrand

Hellbrand a 25 year old Kent state senior wanted to be part of the ASL to learn about sign language. But this opportunity was cut by Kent State. So Hellbrand and some students did the “Silent Standoff”. This students start using Change.org to petition Dr. Jennifer Larson, Kent State's Chair of the Modern and Classical Language Studies Department so they could get back ASL. In fewer than 24 hours, more than 500 have signed the petition - many from the deaf and ASL community. The “Silent Standoff” group publishes this issue through Facebook and tried to talk with Dr.Lason. Hellebrand is a criminal justice that wants to study politics and grassroots and hopes to use sign language to reach deaf communities. The "Silent Standoff" group sees the cuts as disproportionately targeting the ASL program.

Representing both students of religion and people of faith, we refuse to let this message of hate go unanswered, HDS we want to send a clear message to the Social Transformations Conference: we are watching and we will not be silenced.
Tomorrow, Friday April 1, students from Harvard Divinity School and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences will gather to make public what's really going on with the Social Transformations Conference. This is not another benign leadership conference .
Rather, Lance Wallnsau, one of the speakers at this conference, has openly blamed Islam, homosexuality, and abortion for the “downfall” of our society, not to mention Os Hillman’s financial ties to legislation in Uganda that advocates for the death penalty or life sentence as a punishment for LGBT people.

  19. Police Sexual Assault Victim Arrested for Recording Officer Misconduct
    by Alex DiBranco

The article is about a crime f 15 years of hail is about how the crime is get just by a black. Twenty-year-old Tiawanda Moore went to Chicago Police Headquarters to report being fondled by an officer. But Internal Affairs didn't want to take her complaint. After asking for new investigators and being refused, Moore turned on her Blackberry recorder to document this second instance of police misconduct. When the investigators realized they were being taped, they promptly arrested Moore for eavesdropping, a charge that carries a sentence of up to 15 years. It's been over half-a-year since Moore attempted to make her complaint. As the "investigation" drags on for no apparent reason, the police officer has not been temporarily suspended, and is free to continue assaulting and harassing other women. The Chicago Taskforce on Violence against Girls and Young Women has taken up Tiawanda Moore's cause and launched a petition on her behalf on Change.org, Moore didn't know that by turning on a recorder she was committing an illegal act, and the idea that attempting to document misconduct by police would put you away for 15 years is ludicrous. On a broader level, a law such as this one is designed to protect law enforcement at the expense of the people they're supposed to serve, fuels a culture deeply opposed to transparency, and puts victims in jail while giving corrupt officers a free pass.
In addition, the law in question has a pretty key exception: it doesn't apply to an individual who holds a "reasonable suspicion" that they're about to be victim of a crime. Given that Moore was a subject of police misconduct at the time she turned on her cellphone, it seems pretty clear that the charges against her are bogus. The arrest and her pending trial seem more results of a vendetta by people caught in the act of doing wrong than a reasonable response to her actions by people who know Moore is a vulnerable target without the resources to fight back against a cover-up by some bad Chicago cops.

  21. Title: North Carolina Midwives Risk Arrest for Attending Home Births,
    Author: Roxann Mtjoy

“How dare they expect that a woman’s right to choose and her own bodily autonomy extend to her birthing experience?”- Roxann Mtjoy

Amy Medwin a Certified Professional Midwife licensed in the of Virginia, had been attending home births in North Carolina. They brought up charges of practicing midwifery without a license. A charge of might make more sense if North Carolina offered professional licensure for midwives, but they don’t.
Apparently, the North Carolina government doesn’t want its women having home births. Unfortunately, it isn’t the only state that feels that way. Fourteen states currently won’t recognize Certified Professional Midwife Licensed.
The statistic is even unreasonable when you consider just how safe home births are. Planned home births have the same infant and maternal mortality rates a hospital has. Yet lawmakers and doctors opposed to midwife certification. In response the State of Illinois will ensure safe transportation to the hospital in the unlikely event of an emergency during a home birth.
The time has come to tell the state of North Carolina lawmakers that midwives are not criminals. They are health care professionals. It is in the best interests of everyone to recognize and regulate CMPs in North Carolina. How dare they expect that a woman’s right to choose and her own bodily autonomy extend to he birthing experience?
