Politiacians often jockey about their wins but ironically they are missing the winning opportunity to create jobs.

Nonprofit Technology Network is hosting eCycleDC! A eletronics recycling event with impressive thoughts like: The companies can take their recycle surplus computers to the Community of Creative Non-Violence (CCNV). Volunteers will unload the equipment, and the donations will help a program to provide jobs to homeless people in the electronic recycling that is going to be send to low-income families. This program is operated with the DC and federal governments, Cisco Corporations and non-profit organizations. It is a solution to create jobs in DC and prevent toxic pollution. The congress passed legislations that spur similar programs nationswide. In the U.S., many computers, TVs, and smartphones are sent to landfills or incinerators, where their toxic substances is leach into water or the air. Even when they are accepted by an electronics recycler, it cant be quarantee this is really responsible. Nonprofit Technology Network said: that electronics 'recyclers' ship e-waste to China, India, and Nigeria. And the poorest people are have to disassemble them which can affect their health. The U.S recycling have health and safety regulations and the when in China, India and elsewhere, workers put their health in peril without protective equipment or safety regulations. The Fight Continues: Advocates Demand Housing Assistance for HIV+ New Yorkers
by Rich Lombino & Elizabeth Lombino • March 17, 2011

Previous New York State Governor Paterson vetoed a bill that would have provided additional rental assistance to residents who are living with HIV/AIDS. The legislation would have put a cap on rent paid by HIV+ persons based on a percentage of their income.

With The New Governor, Andrew Cuomo people are hopeful he will make this bill to finally be passed.

As we discussed in the original post, HIV management cannot exist without people having their basic needs met, especially housing.

Housing Works is a grassroots organization that has built its foundation on this very principle. They have been working to ensure that all HIV+ New Yorkers have access to housing.

Believing that stable housing [is] the key to helping HIV. Housing Works has been on the front lines of this battle for housing assistance for HIV+ New Yorkers since 2005.

Housing Works remain hopeful to push for this legislation. Let's join them in this crucial fight.
Together, we can persuade Governor Cuomo to make his position on the issue clear.
Please sign the petition urging New York state officials to provide housing assistance for HIV+ residents.

  3. Walmart's Latest Propaganda: No Seriously, We love Workers- by Lauren Kelley

    SUMMARY- MAFE JARAMILLO

    "Don't Let Walmart Invade NYC"
There has been a huge argument about wether or not to let there be a WAL-MART at NY. WAL-MART said they will help, but some believe this is just a lie.

Walmart has issued another round of ads aimed at convincing New Yorkers that the retailer will be great for the city, despite copious evidence to the contrary. And this latest media push is almost comically absurd: It's focused on how "pro-labor" Walmart is.

Walmart's been on a big propaganda kick lately, sending out mailers , a highly-suspicious poll, and a pro-Walmart-in-NYC website. The latest ads, via City Hall, say: "To the special interests trying to block Walmart -- If Walmart wants to come to New York City, let them. I know you have your own political agenda. But it shouldn't prevent hard working people from putting food on the table. That's not right." And then there are these videos of Walmart employees talking about how much they love working at Walmart.

Walmart is all about the working class! And it's "special interests" with a "political agenda" trying to stop Walmart from entering the city. Oh, and also? The more than 1,700 Change.org readers who have signed our petition.
New Yorkers, Walmart is lying to you. By opening a store in New York City, the company will not ultimately help more workers "put food on the table." Jobs will ultimately become less scarce as small businesses are forced to close. And what's more, Walmart's success in New York City would give the company more leverage to open stores in major urban areas across the country.

Tell New York City Mayor Michale Bloomberg that you aren't having it, and you want him to rescind his support for a Walmart in the five boroughs!

  4. Help Save the Nation's First Curbside Recycling Program
    by Zachary Shahan · March 17, 2011

In Berkeley, California the government is looking to reduce costs, but it is trying to eliminate the first curbside recycling program in the United States. This is very worrying because almost everyone in the city considers this to be a very important part of the city, also they should not go backwards in their ecological progress.
The city paid to have a consultant examine the cost of the contracted program compared to the cost of the city, itself, taking over such responsibilities. Third-party consultants have found serious data omissions and unwarranted conclusions in the report and Berkeley's Zero Waste Commission has found the report to be incomplete.
Of course, the Ecology Center is working hard to gain enough support for its program. It has created a petition to the Berkeley City Council here on Change, and has been working to inform and engage the public.
At a City Council meeting last week, numerous citizens and organizations showed support for the recycling program. "Nearly every stakeholder present at the Council meeting concluded that the Sloan Vazquez report contained serious flaws and oversights," the Ecology Center wrote "Yet, the fight for the Ecology Center’s recycling program has only just begun," the Ecology Center cautioned. "It is critical that the Mayor and City Council hear from you before pursuing solutions that will not save money, and will dismantle the innovative recycling infrastructure of our City."

  6. Title: North Carolina Midwives Risk Arrest for Attending Home Births,
    Author: Roxann Mtjoy

“How dare they expect that a woman’s right to choose and her own bodily autonomy extend to her birthing experience?”- Roxann Mtjoy

Amy Medwin a Certified Professional Midwife licensed in the of Virginia, had been attending home births in North Carolina. They brought up charges of practicing midwifery without a license. A charge of might make more sense if North Carolina offered professional licensure for midwives, but they don’t.
Apparently, the North Carolina government doesn’t want its women having home births. Unfortunately, it isn’t the only state that feels that way. Fourteen states currently won’t recognize Certified Professional Midwife Licensed.
The statistic is even unreasonable when you consider just how safe home births are. Planned home births have the same infant and maternal mortality rates a hospital has. Yet lawmakers and doctors opposed to midwife certification. In response the State of Illinois will ensure safe transportation to the hospital in the unlikely event of an emergency during a home birth.
The time has come to tell the state of North Carolina lawmakers that midwives are not criminals. They are health care professionals. It is in the best interests of everyone to recognize and regulate CMPs in North Carolina. How dare they expect that a woman’s right to choose and her own bodily autonomy extend to he birthing experience?

Jose Raul’s children need him. His wife needs him. His father-in-law needs him. And right now, he needs us. Although Jose Raul Cardenas Gonzales has been married for eight years to Judy, a U.S. citizen, and has children who are citizens, he was detained and faces imminent deportation next month. In Denver, Colorado, he is raising two sons and a daughter and caring for Judy’s elderly father. They are part of the Unitarian Universalist Church with a campaign called Standing on the Side of Love for stopping oppression. But his only hope to stay with his family is deferment by the Department of Homeland Security, and that depends signing this petition and calling DHS. The Church they belong to has begun an Immigrant Justice Task and members have already joined Standing on the Side of Love in calling on the government to keep the family together.

Education-Trees Too Dangerous? That's What New Jersey Child Care Inspectors Say

New Jersey school inspectors, who insist that a rural child-care facility cut down every branch off the trees in their yard that hang below seven feet.
An inspector told Sue Maloney that if she doesn’t cut the branches, she would lose her license. For them the branches are only a overgrown vegetation.
"But they play with the trees!” school director Sue Maloney says. It’s what they do.”
A nonprofit, started a petition at Change.org to allow the Moorestown Children's School to keep the trees as they are. Child spends 7.5 hours in front of a screen, it is a travesty to further deprive children of opportunities for outdoor nature play by removing the tree branches, said the nonprofit
Maloney told the blog that this isn't the first time that regulators have interfered with the school's play space. Children also enjoyed moveable wooden stumps made from fat logs cut into pieces.
We tell our kids to be friends of the environment, but when they have an actual chance to interact with the environment, we tell them it's too dangerous. So they will be confused at the end.
Help us fight this small battle if you want the world safe for your kids. If Sign our petition - Save Nature Play in New Jersey!

  17. Could China Be the Next Country to Ban Shark Fins?

The anti-shark finning movement has been gaining momentum across the world, creating victories for sharks.Could China, a nation that considers shark fin soup a cultural delicacy and symbol of status, ban shark fins, too?Ding Liguo, a delegate thinks China should ban shark fins in order to save millions of sharks and preserve endangered species. Together, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong consume the largest percentage of shark fins in the world. The Chinese use shark fins for special occasions and supposed health benefits, but research shows shark fins can have dangerous levels of mercury. shark fins from Hong Kong contained 42 times the safe level of toxic metals for people.the practice of hacking off the fin of a shark and tossing it back into the water to die is inhumane, unsustainable and threatens to drive nearly 30 shark species to extinction. The group's I Pledge campaign helps former shark fin eaters share their stories and reasons why they stopped eating fins. Their stories persuade others to give up the delicacy as well.According to the group, the more people know about shark fins, the less likely they will be to consume it.Liguo believes to only way to truly end the consumption and trade of shark fins is through legislation.A ban on shark fins in China would be a tremendous victory for our oceans and its top predator. Send a letter now and urge the National People's Congress of China to support the proposed ban.

  18. Truth Wins Out, an organization that uncovers the fraudulent tactics and research of the "ex-gay" movement launched an iPhone app earlier this month. The Exodus app is intended to reach tech-savvy young adults, and deliver this dangerous message: you can be "freed from homosexuality" and have your sexual orientation "cured" if you're LGBT.
Apple has given the Exodus app a 4+ rating on iTunes, labeling the app "non-offensive," even though the group tells gay kids that their sexual orientation is "immoral," "satanic,"
Truth Wins Out has started a petition on Change.org, asking Apple to follow their own editorial standards -- and remove Exodus' dangerous "ex-gay" app from iTunes now. The more signatures they deliver, the more likely Apple executives
Just a few months ago, Apple actually removed another app from iTunes that labeled same-sex couples "immoral sexual partnerships."
Exodus International’s "ex-gay" app deserves to be pulled from iTunes. The American Psychological Association, American Medical Association, and American Counseling Association have all rejected "ex-gay" therapy, saying that it results in catastrophic damage to the mental health of its victims.
"This is a hate-based initiative ... intending to brainwash and emotionally destroy gay and lesbian people by coercing them to hate themselves based on their natural sexual orientation."

  19. U.S. factory farms confine 280 million hens in battery cages so small the birds can't even spread their wings.
Battery cages are not only extremely cruel to chickens, the cage facilities also create environmental and public health dangers.
In the last five years, there have been studies conducted on the rates of Salmonella in caged and cage-free eggs, and all thirteen of the studies found that eggs from caged hens had significantly higher rates of Salmonella.
Starbucks may have a new logo and trans-fat-free baked goods, but the coffee company continues to support one soulless business: factory farms full of battery caged hens.
Starbucks claims to care about the health of its consumers, axing "unnecessary ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, dyes, and artificial trans fats." But if they truly want to protect consumer health, Starbucks will drop the dangerous caged eggs from the menu.
In the past few years, Starbucks added more vegan options, such as Lucy's dairy-free, gluten-free cookies, and made it possible for customers to order customized vegan Frappuccino drinks.
Evidenced by these new offerings, Starbucks recognizes that its customers want products that are healthier for people, for animals, and for the environment. Going cage-free seems to be the next logical step for the evolving Starbucks, and hopefully change will come soon.

  20. Chicken-Bashing Video Prompts Petition to End Classroom Slaughter

In 2009, a video surfaced of high school student Robert Gordon slamming a live chicken against the ground, while his buddy Patrick Dougan cheered him on with "Rip him apart" and "This is animal cruelty."
The inspiration, as well as the poor bird, was supplied by their teacher at Hawthorne High School in Alachua County, Florida. Video was part of a classroom slaughter project. Teaching kids where their food comes from is a good thing; unleashing a classroom Gordon and Dougan were part of a Future Farmers of America class, and the animal abuse caught on of teens on live animals with instructions to kill is disturbing. The boys were arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty. Susan Hargreaves, a Florida educator and director of HERO, said: “Bullying and violence are rampant in Florida schools. Pigs, chickens and other animals are used in Florida schools in ways that create an attitude of cruelty and disrespect for both people and animals.”
United Poultry Concerns president Karen Davis shares Hargreaves' concerns. “The orgy of abuse at Hawthorne High School led directly to the torture of a living creature outside the classroom.
