    1. Because she doesn’t like to see animals trapped in cage with no freedom, she thinks that cage keeps them from doing what they are supposed to. I think she relates to it because, like the animals are trapped in a cage she is trapped in the cage of his insecurity and low self-esteem.
    2. At the zoo, the first omen was the bad way in which the vendor was selling them peanuts, the attack by a peacock that according to people they warn you of a death, and a little kid looking at her strangely that makes her felt not peaceful.
    3. Mr. Pignati’s best friend is Bobo, the ugly baboon from the zoo, he used to talk to him and give him peanut, having a relationship as a longtime friend. This suggests me that he is so lonely in his life that he needs someone who understands him like a baboon.
    4. Mr. Conlan wants John to become a business man in the Coffee enterprise he works that doesn’t gain much, and in the other hand, John wants to be an act0r just because he likes it and that’s it, making him to disagree with his father’s decision.
    5. Mr. Pignati told John and Lorraine that his wife was in California visiting a sister and then Lorraine finds a ticket for Conchetta Pignati’s funeral, she’s dead. He lied maybe because he didn’t wanted to face the truth because it makes him feel so bad and guilty, telling he misses her so much.
    6. He seems to be glad, because maybe he sees something special in Lorraine or maybe sees something that reminds him about his dead wife, the one he loved so much and wants her to be round.

    7. In my opinion they seem pretty real, because first, I understand the feelings of Mr. Pignati about his wife’s death, and all that he does has a justification and a reason that are seen through lines in the book.
    8. By smoking and drinking, by being carefree about life and doesn’t caring about his feature, in other words doing what he wants and what he is pleased about.

    Analyzing a Friendship
John and Lorraine’s relationship with Mr. Pignati is pretty fun and interesting. Mr. Pignati acts like a kid when they are around and they seem to have a pretty good relationship full of care and love even though they aren’t related as family and they don’t have the same age. Mr. Pignati has been added something new in his life, some friendship he didn’t had after Conchetta’s death and he has given to John and Lorraine a person with who they can spend the day with, and being with him in some part makes them be better people and learn how to listen and appreciate things, they are an inspiration of a good friendship, without differences.

    1. She didn’t like seeing all those animals and birds and fish behind bars and glass just so a lot of people can star at them. Also she didn’t like it because the attendants there are not intelligent like once an attendant fed the sea lions boringly. Maybe she felt identified with those animals in a certain way and her mom was the attendant, telling her what to do, don’t letting her having fun and enclosing her in a cage.
    2. The first was the antagonist woman selling peanuts. Then she was attacked by a peacock for the bags of peanuts. The third when in the nocturnal room of the Mammal Building a kid stared at the people staring at the cage. All this have something in common: she was being a paranoiac; all of them attack them in a certain way (the woman snapping at her, the peacock throwing himself at her, and the kid staring her in a way that made her nervous) and last she had the peanuts all the time.
    3. HE IS THE UGLIEST, MOST VICIOUS-LOOKING BABOON! He is lonely so he has no one else to talk to than a baboon from the zoo.
    4. He wants John to take over the Exchange. He wants to be an actor because he feels that if he is an actor he is being himself; but, if he is in the Exchange he is a phony in the crowd.
    5. He tells he is visiting his sister in California. Maybe he hasn’t accepted the death of his wife, because she talks about her as if she is alive and has her room intact as if expecting she will return. But still he knows she’s dead because when he saw her in the photo he almost cried. Maybe lying makes him believe it will be less painful.
    6. He started to smile as if he was happy about it. Maybe he does feel she is his daughter. He has taken a liking to Lorraine. If he lies to himself that he isn’t alone and has Lorraine as his family he will be happier.
    Evaluate and Connect
    7. Yes, I agree. Because the dialogues sound like something I would say. It seems like to normal people talking instead of two fantasy characters, because it doesn’t have any fantastic things. Just ‘normal’ teenage things.
    8. He smokes and drinks to show he is mature. To show his individuality he wants to display his imagination by acting and electing his career at something he is really interested in doing. If he was a today student he may be a delinquent painting with paint spray in public walls because he is very care free about life and is not interest in consequences. He maybe also imagines been a Hollywood famous actor.

    Analyzing a Friendship
John and Lorraine had pity for Mr. Pignati because he was an old lonely man who wanted some company. At first they were only interested in the call and leaving him alone again, but then they felt sorry for leaving him alone. Then, they realized Mr. Pignati was a great man and he might have treated them much better than their own families. This is because just by seeing them both his face was entirely happy, because he wanted to serve them, he wasn’t scared of having fun and treat them nicely as if they were his own family with a big kind smile. Mr. Pignati might have added the way he saw life. Like there was no tomorrow, always happy and getting excited with the slightest things. And the most important of all, always receiving life events with a smile.

    2. The first omen was a woman selling peanuts that act very antagonistic making deduce she hate kids, the second omen was when a peacock attacked Lorraine just to make her give him some peanuts and the third one was a little kid about ten years old who was leaning against the cage of the vampire bats in the nocturne room but this child wasn’t looking the bats he was looking at Lorraine while she was watching the bats and that make her feel she was the bat and that the child was looking at her. Everything was against Lorraine which make her nervous and not peaceful.
    3. That his name is Bobo and he is an animal (a baboon). This tells me he is really lonely that the only friend he could have was that little monkey.
    4. He wanted him to work at the Exchange and then to be the one who owns it. John didn’t want to manage the exchange, he wanted to an actor because that allow him to be himself while when he work at the Exchange he wouldn’t be doing what he like but what others were telling him to do like a poppet.
    5. He tell John and Lorraine that she was on a trip to California, he said this because he just wanted to avoid what had really happen making another story and trying to believed it himself although he knows the truth and have been showing it by every time he talks about her he would feel sad. He is just trying to avoid this true to don’t feel so painful.
    6. He felt very happy and that could be shown in the smile that forms in his face. He seems to like Lorraine very much and wish her to be his daughter.

They were kind of sad of how Mr. Pignati live a lonely life, so they decided to accept his ideas of fun and do some stuff with him deleting all his loneliness so he could be happy again. They feels special with one another, Mr. Pignati already have someone he could spend the time with and in the other side Lorraine and John feel special around him, they feel like someone already care about them and they receive stuff they always wanted but anyone get it for them except Mr. Pignati.

Because of a simple joke, if they never did that prank call they wouldn’t even knew who he was. Also, Mr.Pignati maybe wouldn’t have died either. Mr.Pignati added happiness to both, John’s and Lorraine’s life’s, they had more things to do than what they normally did and always had a good time.

1-Lorraine dislikes the zoo because she doesn't like to see all of those animals behind bars and she took a picture of herself in that place.
2- The first omen is the antagonistic way a vendor sells them four bags of peanuts. Second, Lorraine is attacked by a peacock. Third, she walks up to the glass of the bat exhibit where a ten year old kid is sitting with his face right up next to it.
3-Mr. Pignati’s best friend is a baboon. Mr. Pignati’s affection for the animal shows how lonely and childlike he is.
4- John's father has a seat on the Coffee Exchange. His brother, Kenneth, also works at the Coffee Exchange and that's where John's father would like to see him work. John rejects this idea - he wants to be an actor - he doesn't want to wear a suit and carry an attaché case to work.
5- He says that his wife is visiting his sister in California. He lies because he finds his wife’s death too painful to discuss or because he has not yet come to terms with it.
6- He smiles and does not correct her. He feels affection for Lorraine and may wish that she were his daughter.
7- Students who agree that the dialogues are realistic may point to the characters’ use of plain language and incomplete sentences. Students who disagree may argue that John and Lorraine sometimes use overly sophisticated language and have insights that only adults could have.
8- John has long hair, wears disguises, sometimes dons a funny pin, forms odd friendships, refuses to follow school rules, and rebels against his parents. John might express his individuality through tattoos, body piercings, and so on.
