What are your impressions of John? He’s a boy that wants a family and this is why he likes the Pigman so much, he sees the Pigman as family.
What are your impressions of Lorraine? Has a low self-esteem because of her mother but still she is caring about others.

    1. How does John feel about school? How did he act on his feelings when he was a freshman? How does he act on them now? What does this change in his behavior tell you about him? John hates school. In his freshman years he put bombs to harm the institution and get the boys busted. He only writes in desks now. He is growing up, and realizing all he did is no use.
    2. What does Mrs. Jensen think of Lorraine? Does Lorraine share her opinion? Explain. Mrs. Jensen thinks her daughter is not a pretty girl, she walks incorrectly, and she is putting on too much weight and wears her clothes funny. Lorraine knows she is not the most beautiful girl but she thinks the way her mother criticizes her is too much.
    3. Describe the telephone prank that John and Lorraine play on Mr. Pignati. How does John feel during the prank? How does Lorraine? What do their feelings suggest about each of them? John and Lorraine were searching for a way for his random victim, Mr. Pignati, to talk. They decide to make up that they are from a charity fund but Mr. Pignati continues talking about random minor facts and jokes. John took the advantage and tries to take the ten dollars Mr. Pignati is offering while Lorraine thinks its wrong to take money from that old man.
    4. Why does Mr. Conlan install a lock on the family telephone? How does John respond? What do their actions suggest about their relationship? Mr Conlan installs a lock because he doesn’t want anyone calling from it so when he calls it could be taken. John thinks is absurd and trick them, he glues the lock so no one can call at all. This shows John has no respect to his father and his decisions.
    5. How does Mr. Pignati treat John and Lorraine during their first visit? Why does he treat them this way? He received them happily and like they know each other forever. He wants company so he treats them this way; this way he doesn’t feels alone for once since her wife left.
    Evaluate and Connect
    6. Do you think that Mr. Pignati is a believable character? Why or why not? Yes, because he has common problems like normal people. The only thing is that he doesn’t accept them, as many people in real life.
    7. How might John answer the Focus Activity question on page 16? How might Lorraine? Are their ideas about friendship similar to yours? Why or why not? I think they both will think friendships are based in honesty and supporting each other no matter how different they are, just as how I think.

    Analyzing a Relationship
In a paragraph or two, analyze John’s relationship with his parents. What does Lorraine think is the cause of the problems between them? Do you think Lorraine is right? What other factors might be involved? What might the family do to get along better?
John´s relationship with his parents isn’t the best one. John´s parents don’t show affection to him and they don’t even pay attention to what he might be into. They want him to be as his older brother. John doesn’t see a reason why he might show any respect to his parents and he doesn’t care much about them. He only sees them as useless old people. Lorraine thinks the cause is the alcoholism problem that John’s father had years ago, maybe she’s right. But other factors could have also worn this relationship out. Maybe these parents didn’t support his child in a critical moment and that’s why he shows resentment towards his parents. The best way they should get along better is first clarifying their feelings and expectations towards each other. They should try to be more caring, know each other better and the most important: support each other.

    1. He doesn't like it, at all. He acted like a total jerk. He kind of changed. It tells me he did felt close to the Pigman and it affected him a lot what had happened.

    2. She doesn't think Lorraine is pretty and Lorraine feels she isn't pretty because her mothers says so.

    3. They were just making a prank call to see if Lorraine could last the longest but ended up in something else. John just wants the money. Lorraine does not want to take money from an old man. It tells e john is a jerk and Lorraine does have a heart.

    4. Because john used the phone too much. He glues it. That they hate each other.

    5. Really nice! I think it is because he thought they were from a charity.

    ANALYZING A RELATIONSHIP

John is getting near to being an alcoholic and he is a big smoker too. He doesn't get along with his parents, he doesn't even call them mom or dad, mother or father, he thinks he is the very best and thinks he has control over everything, it is not like that! Lorraine says his parents contradict each other by the things they say/do and John follows this things. I do think she is right. Maybe he thinks he is "mature" when he is not. Maybe have a few talks.

1John loathe school, when he was a freshman he showed those feelings by doing different things like drinking or smoking and also picking on substitute teacher, example: when there was a substitute teacher they would buy apples on Wednesday and throw them on a floor because it would make a horrible sound, John was always part of it, he was like the boss. He would be bathroom bomber. He shows his hatred towards school by just scribbling on the desks which he categorized as not a huge crime.
2.Mrs. Jensen is constantly picking on her own daughter by telling her things like “You’re not pretty” or “You’d be pretty if you dress this way”, Lorraine feels completely sad about it and she would cry at night. She thinks its because of how her dad died a few years later they got legally divorced and she wished her mother was different.
    3. It was Lorraine’s turn to get someone on the phone and be enough time with them in a prank calling way but then John got into the conversation and Lorraine said they were for a Charity fund and when Mr. Pignati heard about that he offered 10 dollars. John knew the guy was too nice so he decided to keep the prank going, in the meanwhile Lorraine thought it was not fine to keep it going and ask for money because he was such a nice old man who sounded like he was really happy to talk to someone.
    4. Mr. Conlan which is John’s dad decided to install a lock on the family telephone because every time he called it would be taken but John decided to do something about it so he puts some glue on the lock so that anyone in the house can call from it.
    5. Mr. Pignati treated them like if they were part of his family, no strangers at all and he did this because he have been feeling really lonely since his wife left to a supposedly vacation.
    Evaluate and Connect
    6. Yeah he is a believable character because just like all of us he starts to face a lot of dilemmas in just like we do he tries not to accept them, he is also feeling lonely sometimes so that’s why he likes to talk to people, just like us.

    Analyzing a Relationship
In a paragraph or two, analyze John’s relationship with his parents. What does Lorraine think is the cause of the problems between them? Do you think Lorraine is right? What other factors might be involved? What might the family do to get along better?
John’s relationship with his parents is not great at all because they are either always fighting or they do not agree in decisions that are made in the house. Lorraine thinks that the main cause of this problem is that John’s dad used to drink a lot of alcohol and that is reflected in John, she might be right. Other factors that might be involved with their problem is that John’s father is always working and they are always comparing him with his older brother.
Maybe its also because they don’t support John’s dream on being an actor and tries to encourage him on being like his older brother, which he hates that because he wants his dreams to come true and he obviously would like support from his parents. One way to make them get along better would be sharing their feelings and not just bottle them up because that can cause extreme hurt inside of them, support each other no matter what, share love with them and always remember that the family is first than anything ( obviously work is in important but what is more important than money is the love you give to your beloved ones)

    1. That he is a boy that doesn’t care about his future and remains in the thought that life should be live the way you want. He is not caring and does not show respect.
    2. She is softer than John, basically more human, a compassionate person that cares about others more than herself, even though it seems she has a low self-esteem.

    1. In the book it is shown the dislike of john for school, he used to do bad acts like school vandalism when he was a freshmen; now that he is a sophomore he left behind all that kid stuff, writing on desks as his mayor crime, this shows that he has grown in respect and he thinks more in his future.
    2. Mrs. Jensen, Lorraine’s mother thinks that Lorraine isn’t pretty, she almost every day criticizes her appearance saying she looks like a monster. Lorraine says she isn’t exactly Miss America or the most beautiful woman in the world, but she isn’t the ugly snowman her mother used to say looks like her.
    3. John and Lorraine where doing telephone pranks in which they have to keep the other person of the other line the longer as possible, choosing randomly a phone from the phone book. It was Lorraine’s turn to choose a number, she chooses Mr. Pignati’s, and calls him pretending to be the head of a charity organization and asks him if he wanted to collaborate with $10, he accede; Mr. Pignati then knew it was a phone prank so he hang up. After Pignati’s death, John felt so much guilty that he blamed Lorraine for picking out his number. This tells me that John has so many problems at home that he doesn’t want to have troubles and Lorraine didn’t wanted to lie in the phone pranks so she is more human than John.
    4. Mr. Conlan, John’s father, install a lock on the family phone because he knew John would make all that phone calls that for him were just kid stuff and he thinks John needs to grow up to become a business man in which John disagrees; this tells me that they have a relationship based on disagreements.
    5. Mr. Pignati treated John and Lorraine in a way in which they knew he didn’t wanted them to go home. He acted tis way maybe because he feels so lonely after Conchetta’s death that he needs someone that cares for him and he cares for.
    Evaluate and Connect
    6. He is a believable character because the only reason he acts that way is because he misses his wife so much, the woman that he loved more than his life and occupy a part in his heart no one could fill, so he see in John and Lorraine something special, and wants them to be around as friends like in his youth.
    7. Maybe John will say his best friend is Lorraine, because he knows her more than he knows him and vice versa, he finds in her a second self, even though he is different to Lorraine, she will have a similar answer, because they find in each other the person with whom they can be sincere. I think my answers will be very similar.
    Literature and Writing
    Analyzing a Relationship
John is a boy that has marked his way in school, but not as he should; he has become like a rebel without cause, he doesn’t care about anything, neither his body nor his future and in all his freshmen year has shown so much disrespect. His parents always see in him the son they didn’t expect, like if they want someone better, someone that doesn’t give them so much trouble; John always says his parents want them to be just like his older brother, the perfect son, that never gave them trouble and has been to them more than a blessing. Lorraine thinks John parents don’t understand him in any way because they don’t have his imagination and don’t understand his naivety ad creativity and don’t think about life the way John sees it. I think Lorraine is right, but his parents maybe are just worrying for him, in his future; in a way his father wants him to be a business man, but don’t listen to the reason why he wants to be an actor, because he doesn’t understand his mind.

John´s relationship with his parents isn’t like the Jonas brothers’ relationship I would say is the opposite. John´s parents don’t even pay attention to what he might be doing or saying, even through John is a trouble maker his parents aren’t a good example either. His mother lies and his father was alcoholic. John doesn’t see a reason why he might show any respect to his parents and he doesn’t care much about them. Lorraine thinks the cause is the alcoholism addiction that his dad had and I’m sure that she’s right. But other factors could be the lack of trust, the lack of respect and lack of authority.

John is not very close to his parents, they don’t get along very well and that could be the cause of his constant drinking and smoking. They don’t pay attention to each others. I think Lorraine is correct because if they don’t pay attention to each other by don’t worrying for their son to act the way he does. Then the problem would be worst.
